Born in 1902, she taught languages - Latin and French - as well as English literature. My Complete Shakespeare, my Poems of Keats, my Essays of Emerson (five wee volumes), used to belong to her...a woman I never met, a distant relative, and her signature is on the front free endpaper of each book.

That's special. I bet you two would have had a lot to talk about if you had met.

I hope she had someone to talk to...

Her husband was very Victorian...though I'm basing that on the only story I've heard. They had a daughter and when she was young she once said, "Father, you've had a haircut!" And his response? "Do not make personal remarks."

Yikes.
