OK. There is actually a place in Portland where I can try this and so far I've been holding out. It needs to happen.

We have two restaurants here that sell nothing but the stuff: Smoke's Poutinerie and Poutini's House of Poutine.

Ok, I had to wikipedia it. Even though I've been to Canada and Montreal. It didn't appeal so I didn't try it. Like IB, I'm now starting to regret it.

PS I love the name Poutini's House of Poutine! Hilarious.

ok, I had to look that up as well. Poutine, that is. That. Is. Horrible.

St. Louis has something similar, without the cheese curds. but with addition of fried egg, some sort of meat (hamburger, for instance), and gravy. Usually on hash browns but sometimes fries. It'll kill you, guaranteed, with regular ingestion, in 3 years.

Was it clogged arteries that caused their wings to fail?

The name alone makes me want to go to Poutini's. Any chance they do a vegetarian version?

Hey, Helen is back!

You will now need to know how to pronounce poutine. It's a Quebecois dish if I can use the word "dish" to describe such a messy meal. The stress is always on the second syllable. In French-French it would be pronounced pou-teen (not that anyone in France would touch it). In Quebec amongst the French-Canadians it's pou-tin. Now you know.

Like boudin. In cajun: boo-dan.

It sounds a lot like chips bolognaise to me: the curd cheese is an inspired addition.
I'm wondering if the etymology is the same as for puttanesca sauce?

Mrs. S: It sure sounds like it.

All this talk is making me hungry.

For what, exactly?

Deloney said...

Linguine with mushrooms and green peppers. Honest!

Ok, I'm game. Next time I'm in Canada I'll try it. I'd not heard of it until the comments of IB's recent post. I have had French Fries with cheese sauce as well as French Fries with gravy. This seems to be a combination of sorts.

Have you overdosed on poutine and can't get to the keyboard?

I'm living on snowpeas and water chestnuts. How was your holiday?

Days of wine and sunburned noses. Well, not really the latter, it rained and was cold for much of the time. But still very, very enjoyable.
