It's the 60th anniversary of the single. I mean the 7" vinyl single, 45 rpm, a song on the a-side and a song on the b-side, you big babies who don't remember. None of the articles I read today sang their praises loud enough. Certain celebrities were asked about the first singles they bought but not for a moment did I sense their unmitigated joy. A few people mentioned the lovely picture-sleeves a few of the records came in. I can't remember for sure the first single I bought with my own money. I owned quite a few but I was a small-time career-criminal at the time. At least one writer on the net came up with an appropriate title for his article: "Seven Inches of Pleasure."

I had no idea it was the 60th anniversary of the single. My first one was "In the Year 2525" by ...
by... Hmm, I have no idea. And I don't remember what was on the B side
I googled on your behalf. It was "Zagar and Evans"...one-hit wonders I guess! I remember the song, too.
That made me smile.
And I remember the song too. And singles. They were things other cool kids had. I had to live with the radio and piano. When I could finally afford a stereo, CDs were just round the corner.
So was it up the jumper or inside a magazine?
Are you implying I was a randy scouse git?
I used to own Backside in Motion on a 45...
I did some more googling but I can't find anything on that song...though I did find a site with the same name...
"7 inches of Pleasure," hmmm?
So I take it the singles were actually only 5 inches?
:-)
It went something like:
Backside in motion ooh ooh
I'm going to have to penalize you ooh ooh
Backside in motion, baby
You know that's against the rules.
I can't find it either. I'm SURE I didn't just imagine it. I remember the tune quite clearly.
Oh, I found it. It's actually Backfield in Motion. Sung by Kiss in the Dark. Surely you've heard of them?
You remembered!
How is it that Deloney posts wonderful things about a minute after I check blogs, then it takes me a few days to get back here, apparently, and so much has happened? Great post, you randy scouse git.
Helen remembered her song and I remembered that "Randy Scouse Git" by the Monkees was the first single betty ever bought.
Yooo hooo! Deloney!! I miss you.
Yes, are you spending a lot of time on your next jukebox selection?
I don't know that I ever bought a single, not even a cassette single or one of those useless mini disc things ....
I've been sick in bed since last Sunday. A combination cold/flu. It's not something that responds to antibiotics. Does anyone know anything about natural/herbal expectorants? I need to get rid of all this muck in my chest and head.
Oh, sorry to hear that Deloney. All I remember is that Tiger Balm (which is kind of like Vick's on steroids) can clear the sinuses immediately. Maybe if you put some in boiling water and do one of those steam tents for your head? Just don't open your eyes...
And boil up some real ginger, and add some lemon and honey. That's not for steaming, it's for drinking.
Cayenne pepper steeped in whiskey. That'll clear your sinuses... and maybe help you forget how terrible you feel.
Or, coltsfoot tea, if you're feeling less adventurous.
